Protomartyr – Relatives In Descent

Protomartyr is an American rock band formed in 2008 in Detroit, Michigan, United States. It features Joe Casey on vocals, Greg Ahee on guitar, Alex Leonard on drums and Scott Davidson on bass guitar. Their music has been labeled as post-punk and punk rock. Josh Terry of Consequence of Sound stated that the band “blends the moody atmospherics of ‘70s U.K. post-punk with the raw sensibility of their Motor City garage-rock forebears.” Relatives in Descent is their fourth album, released on 29 September 2017. Their first to be released through Domino Recording Company, the album is much darker and more philosophical than its predecessors. While lyrically not a concept album, it is produced so that many songs flow from one to another, forming an album rather than a collection of songs. According to NPR, “Relatives In Descent is a collection of lyrically dense, deeply philosophical songs that grapple with some of life’s thorniest questions: What does it mean to be human? What is truth? What is the nature of good and evil?”. Like its predecessors, it received critical acclaim from several sources.
