Onyx – Black Rock

Onyx is an American hardcore hip hop group from South Jamaica, Queens, New York City, formed in 1988. They are known for introducing the art of slam dancing into hip-hop and for their style: loud screaming, aggression, fighting with each other, stage diving, throwing water, rapping the grimy voice and the bald head fashion. Black Rock is their seventh album, probably the most aggressive release of their career. A hybrid of Hip-Hop and Rock and Roll, in this album Onyx mix hardcore vocals with heavy guitar riffs. The inspiration for the album came from their 1993 “Judgement Night” track with Brooklyn’s hardcore punk/heavy metal fusion band Biohazard which was the lead single on the influential Judgment Night movie soundtrack, where hip-hop meet rock in many of its various forms.
