Massive Attack – Protection

Massive Attack are an English electronic band formed in 1988 in Bristol, England, by Robert “3D” Del Naja, Adrian “Tricky” Thaws, Andrew “Mushroom” Vowles and Grant “Daddy G” Marshall. The band currently consists of Del Naja, Thaws and Marshall, with Shara Nelson and Horace Andy as guest vocalists. Some of their most noted songs have been without choruses and have featured dramatically atmospheric dynamics, conveyed through either distorted guitar crescendos, lavish orchestral arrangements or prominent, looped/shifting basslines, underpinned by high and exacting production values, involving sometimes copious digital editing and mixing. Protection is their second studio album, released on 26 September 1994. Like most of Massive Attack’s albums, the music often defies categorisation, ranging from R&B (title track and “Sly”) to hip hop/rap (“Karmacoma” and “Eurochild”) to reggae-tinged synth-pop (“Spying Glass”) to classical-influenced electronica instrumentals (“Weather Storm” and “Heat Miser”). Tricky again appeared on the album, rapping on the tracks “Karmacoma” and “Eurochild”.
