Duke Ellington feat Mahalia Jackson – Black, Brown And Beige

Duke Ellington was an American composer, pianist, and leader of a jazz orchestra, which he led from 1923 until his death over a career spanning more than six decades. Although widely considered to have been a pivotal figure in the history of jazz, Ellington embraced the phrase “beyond category” as a liberating principle and referred to his music as part of the more general category of American Music rather than to a musical genre such as jazz. Black, Brown and Beige is a 1958 jazz album by the man and his orchestra, featuring Mahalia Jackson. The album is a recording of a revised version of Ellington’s Black, Brown and Beige suite. After a disappointing critical response to its first performance in 1943, Ellington divided the three-part suite into six shorter sections, leaving in “Come Sunday” and “Work Song”, and it is this version that is recorded here.
