Beastie Boys were an American rap rock group from New York City, formed in 1978. The group was composed of Michael “Mike D” Diamond (vocals, drums), Adam “MCA” Yauch (vocals, bass) and Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz (vocals, guitar, programming). Originally a hardcore punk band, Beastie Boys had largely abandoned the genre in favor of hip hop and rap rock by the time work began on their debut studio album Licensed to Ill. The group mixes elements of punk, funk, rap, rock, Latin music and jazz into their music. They have also been described as alternative hip hop and alternative rock. Beastie Boys have sold 20 million records in the United States, making them the biggest-selling rap group since Billboard began recording sales in 1991. Beastie Boys were one of the longest-lived hip hop acts worldwide before they disbanded in 2012 following Yauch’s death from cancer. Root Down is an EP by American hip hop group the Beastie Boys, released in 1995. It features 10 tracks, three of them being variations of the track “Root Down”, from the Beastie Boys’ 1994 album Ill Communication. The remaining seven tracks were recorded “live in Europe, winter 1995”. The hidden track heard in the end is a radio jingle in Hebrew made in Israel’s military radio station Galey Tzahal. It promoted a Beastie Boys special aired prior to their only two concerts in the country, in March 1995. When Mike D and Ad-Rock were interviewed in the station they heard the recording and asked for it.
