A Tribe Called Quest was an American hip hop group formed in St. Albans, Queens, New York in 1985. They are regarded as pioneers of alternative hip hop music as they successfully bridged the gap between jazz and hip hop. Their production also influenced their contemporaries, thus changing the sound of hip hop; One good example is Dr. Dre who produced his highly regarded debut The Chronic after being inspired by the Tribe’s second album. Beats, Rhymes and Life is their fourth studio album, released on July 30, 1996. Produced by The Ummah, the album is a departure from the joyful, positive vibe of the group’s earlier albums and is regarded as their darkest album in content. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), on October 27, 1998, with shipments of one million copies in the United States, becoming the group’s most commercially successful album.
