SPK – Zamia Lehmanni

SPK were an industrial music and noise music group formed in 1978 by New Zealand-born psychiatric nurse Graeme Revell and Neil Hill (one of Revell’s schizophrenic patients). They set out to expose the ‘cathedral of death’, and they did so by incorporating images of medical abnormalities and cruelty, and composing the soundtrack to an autopsy movie. According to Australian rock music historian Ian McFarlane, SPK were “at the forefront of the local post-punk, electronic/experimental movement of the late 1970s … [their] music progressed from discordant, industrial-strength metal noise to sophisticated and restrained dance-rock with strange attributes”. After they disbanded, Graeme Revell focused on film scores, with his soundtrack credits including Psycho 4 (1992), The Hand That Rocks The Cradle (1994), The Crow (1994), Street Fighter (1995) and From Dusk Till Dawn (1996). Zamia Lehmanni (Songs Of Byzantine Flowers) is their landmark album released in 1986 with Karina Hayes on vocals. This is a 2019 re-issue with new liner notes by Graeme Revell.
