Gerry Mulligan was an American jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, composer and arranger. Though Mulligan is primarily known as one of the leading jazz baritone saxophonists – playing the instrument with a light and airy tone in the era of cool jazz – he was also a significant arranger, working with Claude Thornhill, Miles Davis, Stan Kenton, and others. Side A of this release was recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival, Rhode Island on July 6 1957. Side B was recorded live at the Hollywood Bowl on August 2 1957. Gerry Mulligan is on saxophone and piano, Bob Brookmeyer on valve trombone, Joe Benjamin on bass, and Dave Bailey on drums
