Dave Brubeck – Time Out
Much like Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue, Time Out by the Dave Brubeck Quartet has never lost its power of fascination. More than sixty years after being made, this great album never went out of print (even though the record company that produced it was skeptical at first!). Despite the controversy it sparked when it was released – which seems laughable today (Is it or is it not real jazz?) – it has remained a best-seller. It’s a flawless LP, and a small monument to sound perfection (Paul Desmond’s alto sax!), full of rhythmic rigor complemented with flexibility (bassist Eugene Wright and drummer Joe Morello’s complex and luminous combinations). It showcases a previously unheard melodic richness: on these unforgettable tunes, Dave Brubeck and his alter ego Paul Desmond seem to be painting a canvas. Every note is like a touch of color, expertly distilled, subtly hypnotic, ideally thought. Time Out opened the doors of jazz perception to millions of people, and continues to do so.
