Baxter Dury – The Night Chancers

Baxter Dury is a songwriter and vocalist with a strong and distinctive style. After a tempestuous early life, he began his musical career by performing at a memorial service for his dad, pub rock/new wave icon Ian Dury. The Night Chancers is his sixth studio album, released on 20 March 2020 under Heavenly Recordings. Dury and his cast of handy helpers imbue the songs with a kind of gutter-y grandeur and smudged beauty that was hinted at in the past but now comes through loud and clear. This is oddly pretty music with sneaky sweet melodies and singalong choruses peeking through the grime that are oft slashed into ribbons by Dury’s nasty monologues, snipey asides, and overall Gainsbourg-ian vinegar. The Night Chancers was met with universal acclaim reviews from critics.
